Great Allegheny Passage

I didn’t talk too much about the trail I ran on yesterday, but I did a portion of the Great Allegheny Passage. The trail runs from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD (150 miles) where it joins the C & O Canal Towpath to Washington DC for a total of 335 continuous miles. I’ve run on this trail a few other times as I was training for earlier half marathons. It’s almost completely flat (less than 1.5% grade overall), with a really wide trail and although I didn’t see anyone yesterday, I saw a lot of people on bikes and walking their dogs in the fall and summer. The last two times I ran on this trail, I went the opposite direction, so I wanted to share some of the sights from that portion of the trail. The best part is being able to go over the viaduct that’s 1,908 feet long! It can be a little disorienting, but it’s awesome to be running so high above the traffic below. Plus, as you cross the viaduct, you get to see expansive farmland and a sprinkling of windmills.

Have you ever been on the Great Allegheny Passage? What are some of the best sights from your runs?
